When it Rains in Phuket

Unless you love the rain, there’s two month of the year that you should try to avoid in Phuket…September and October. Guess when I was there…right at the beginning of monsoon season in September! Of course, lol. It rained all 7 days I was there. Lameeeeeee I know. But this is the crazy part; for someone who doesn’t particularly enjoy the rain, I still had such a good time! & so can you! Phuket is so lively, adventurous and dark at the same time.

Tip: RENT A CAR!!

I’m a huge fan of motorbikes in Thailand but for Phuket but during rainy season, a car was definitely the better option to explore. Plus, the island is really hilly.

Eat!!
It was obvious there was going to be limited beach time if any on this trip so what the hell, LET’S EAT!! Hands down our favorite restaurant in Phuket was Restaurant #6. You know it’s good when the line is 20 people deep in the rain! The food is authentic and cheap. The fruit shakes were some of the best I had had in Thailand. & they have another restaurant up the hill with car service to take you up there to enjoy the same delicious food in a much more relaxed atmosphere.

Muay Thai Fights
Thailand’s most famous sport! Head over to Bangla Boxing Stadium in Patong to catch the fights held 3 nights a week. Be warned though… people can get pretty rowdy at these things! It was quite interesting to see all these crazy hand gestures going everywhere as people fervently try to place their sports bet. Even though I heard gambling on boxing is illegal in Thailand. I just drank my beer and enjoyed the ass beatings.

Visit the Night Markets
Once the sun goes down you want to be at a night market. The most popular one being the Phuket Weekend Market just outside of Phuket Town. You can find just about anything your heart desires. Clothes, movies, souvenirs, fake anything (sunglasses and purses being the most common) and of course food!

Phuket Simon Cabaret
It’s hard to believe that the performers are LADYBOYS! They are so gorgeous and put on such an entertaining show. A visual spectacle of extravagant costumes, glitzy makeup and excellent choreography makes for one flamboyantly fun night.

Karon Viewpoint
A must on every typical tourist itinerary. & while it wasn’t on my agenda initially, I’m sure glad we drove by it on the way to the Big Buddha & that there was a break in the rain! Known to locals as “three-beaches hill” you can take in the stunning view of Kata Noi, Kata, and Karon beaches.

Big Buddha
Another must do touristy thing so I was like, “sure why not.”  A massive 45-meter-high marble Buddha statue with great views. But with all the rain, there was no view for me. Still, it was pretty impressive to see the Giant Buddha up close.

Party on Bangla Rd
Because a little rain never hurt anybody! & you do not want to miss out on the debauchery that is Soi Bangla, Phuket’s most infamous party street. Half naked Thai girls, nightclubs, beer and go-go bars line both sides of the streets. It’s nothing that I could describe and do justice, but rather something you have to see with your own two eyes! If it’s a party you’re looking for, you’ve come to the right place 😉 But whatever you do, DO NOT play connect 4 with the Thai ladies at the bars. No trickery, they are really just that good! Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
